How GPA Is Calculated

Your grade point average is a credit-weighted average of your grades. Each letter grade is converted to grade points on a 4.0 scale, multiplied by the course's credit hours, summed, and then divided by total credits.

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours, where Grade Points = grade value × credits for each course.

Standard 4.0 Grade Scale

  • A / A+: 4.0  |  A−: 3.7
  • B+: 3.3  |  B: 3.0  |  B−: 2.7
  • C+: 2.3  |  C: 2.0  |  C−: 1.7
  • D+: 1.3  |  D: 1.0  |  F: 0.0

Why Credit Hours Matter

GPA is weighted by credits, so a grade in a 4-credit course affects your average more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. This is why doing well in heavy-credit classes has an outsized impact on your overall GPA — and why a single low grade in a major course can be hard to offset.

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

This calculator computes an unweighted GPA on the 4.0 scale, the most widely used standard. Some high schools use a weighted scale that adds bonus points for honors or AP/IB courses (often up to 5.0). If your school uses different grade-point values, adjust the grades you select to match your institution's scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each grade to its point value, multiply by the course credits, add up all the grade points, and divide by the total credits. This calculator does it automatically as you add courses.

What is a good GPA?

On a 4.0 scale, a GPA above 3.5 is considered strong, 3.0–3.5 is solid, and below 2.0 usually risks academic probation. Standards vary by school and program.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 and treats all courses equally. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses like AP or honors, sometimes reaching 5.0.

How much does one bad grade affect my GPA?

It depends on the course's credits and how many total credits you have. A low grade in a high-credit course or early in your studies has a larger effect than one in a small or late course.
